Sunday

Explore Sorrento and Massa Labrensa

After breakfast this morning, we’ve scheduled a visit to explore beautiful Sorrento. Through the origins of the city date back to the old Etruscans and Greeks, the Romans colonized the city in the First Century BC. Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, it’s one of Europe’s most romantic places.

Next we’ll drive out to visit the little villages on the Sorrentino Peninsula. Thanks to a lack of easy access, this ruggedly beautiful corner remains quite unspoiled.

Midday, we’ll stop at a nearby farmhouse restaurant for lunch followed by a gelato reputed to be one of the best in Italy

Monday

Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius

Without a doubt Italy’s most famous archeological site is nearby Pompeii. At the time of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, it is estimated that 35,000 people lived in this busy city. After decades of patient excavation this ancient Roman town reveals itself, down to the magnificent mosaics in the floors of homes, the frescos on the walls and the ruts of chariots in the paving stones. Even if you have been here before, Pompeii easily is worth a return visit.

We’ll see Herculaneum, a seaside resort for the wealthy. Excavation of this smaller resort village presented a greater challenge than Pompeii, as it took much longer to uncover the grandiose villas with their magnificent frescos. Finally we’ll drive up to the 3200-foot of Mount Vesuvius to view the volcano and enjoy grand views of the Bay of Naples. A fascinating day.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Tuesday

Positano

Positano is the “quintessence of picturesque” - a village clinging to a near-vertical cliff. It’s beauty has attracted countless artists such as Picasso as well as notable musicians including Toscanini and Bernstein. Through this once exclusive retreat has been discovered, it still retains its unique character.

We’ll explore Positano and walk down the narrow streets to the Marina Grande where fishermen once hauled their boats onto the sandy beach Today shoppers explore the little boutiques and elegant fashion showrooms and photographers find themselves in paradise. All of us will fee spoiled by a delightful lunch near the sea.

Regardless whether you return filled with works of art or shipping bags, it will be a marvelous day. We’ll share our stories this evening over cocktails by the pool.

Or the drive can bring you to a trailhead for an interesting hike. Of course you could elect to enjoy the comforts of our villa, to sleep in a little, to swim in the poor, to catch up on e-mail or read a good book near the lemon trees with a glass of wine.
