Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius
Without a doubt Italys most famous
archeological site is nearby Pompeii. At the time of the eruption of Mount
Vesuvius in 79 AD, it is estimated that 35,000 people lived in this busy city.
After decades of patient excavation this ancient Roman town reveals itself,
down to the magnificent mosaics in the floors of homes, the frescos on the
walls and the ruts of chariots in the paving stones. Even if you have been here
before, Pompeii easily is worth a return visit.
Well see Herculaneum, a seaside resort for the wealthy. Excavation of this
smaller resort village presented a greater challenge than Pompeii, as it took
much longer to uncover the grandiose villas with their magnificent frescos.
Finally well drive up to the 3200-foot of Mount Vesuvius to view the volcano
and enjoy grand views of the Bay of Naples. A fascinating day.
